Sustaining a Library

Sustainability is a major goal of the NLI

Join us to help ensure that these libraries will help children long into the future! JWI works with local communities to set up support systems of volunteers who will remain involved with shelter libraries long after the facilities have been established. Shelters need assistance to keep the libraries stocked and up-to-date. Please contact JWI to get involved. Volunteers can:

  • Raise funds to re-stock the shelves, as children leave the shelter and take home books to start their own library. These funds can be used to purchase new books with the help of the NLI’s partner, First Book. This partnership allows us to purchase books for an average of $2.50 each, providing more new books than a book collection could! We can help you organize a fund drive, but if you still prefer to collect books, please see our book collection policies* below.

  • Participate in tutoring and literacy programs, children’s reading circles, book clubs, advocacy programs and finding community support for a local library.

Young volunteers will find an ideal community service opportunity in JWI’s Library Ambassador program. School groups and classes can reach out to their communities for donations to support a local shelter library. As individual Library Ambassadors, B’nai Mitzvah students can adopt this mitzvah project and enlist the support of their guests.

*Book Acceptance Policy:

Please contact JWI before doing a book drive so we can notify the shelter, help you with logistics and maximize the impact of your project! Please remember that:

  • Minimum donation is 50 books.
  • Books must be brand-new.
  • JWI will choose which shelter receives your books – either the closest
  • NLI library in need of restocking or, if none exists nearby, another shelter where we’ve identified a need. (We do, of course, appreciate your input in selecting a recipient.)
  • Donors are responsible for book delivery: You can either drop them off or ship them directly to the shelter.
