The judge, jury and general public’s lack of knowledge and understanding around the dynamics of domestic violence can severely impact survivors’ cases as they navigate a variety of court proceedings. This webinar focuses on building skills to testify in criminal and civil cases as well as other legal and official proceedings, focusing on creating organizational policies for testifying as well as tips for successful testimony and cross examination.
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Recognize the value of being present for a client’s court proceedings
- Consider key factors in creating organizational policies on testifying on behalf of a client
- Gain skills to effectively testify and be cross-examined
Referred to as “the mother of the Texas Battered Women’s Movement,” Toby Myers helped found and has been active in organizations to end violence against women. In her fourth decade of the work, her current domestic violence related activities include work with attorneys usually as an expert witness, a limited counseling practice, serving on boards and committees, and training and technical assistance. Myers still dreams of people living in intimate relationships that are not only non-violent, but also mutually respectful, mutually satisfying, and growth promoting. Toby co-chairs the Advisory Committee for the National Alliance to End Domestic Abuse with Jewish Women International, is one of the roving conveners of JFS-Houston's Shalom Bayit and serves as Vice-President of the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence Board of Directors.
Deborah D. Tucker has contributed 41 years of volunteer and professional leadership in building the movement to end violence against women. Currently she serves as the Domestic Violence Specialist in the Division of Practice Excellence for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
Debby co-chairs the Advisory Committee for JWI’s National Alliance to End Domestic Abuse. She is President of the Board of Directors of the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence (NCDSV), which is devoted to consulting, training, and advocacy. She has developed prevention and intervention programs as well as the advocated for improvements to laws and policies at the local, state, national and international levels to enhance personal, professional, community, and societal efforts to end sexual and domestic violence. In 2014 Debby was named a Distinguished Alumna of the College of Liberal Arts at Texas State University and inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame.
