Virtual Event: Next Steps with UN Women

Join us Tuesday, January 30th, 2:00 p.m. ET on Zoom for an exclusive event with the creators of the #MeToo_Unless_Ur_A_Jew initiative to learn about their upcoming testimony to the UK Parliament House of Lords. Ambassador Meryl Frank, who was involved in the establishment of UNWomen, will unpack current challenges and explain what we should listen for during the visit to Israel by the UN special envoy on sexual violence. 

The panel will also include Liraz Charhi, Israeli actress and star of Apple TV's "Tehran" and international journalist and political analyst, Catherine Perez-Shakdam. 

The event will be moderated by JWI CEO Meredith Jacobs, who will also be testifying in the House of Lords.

Liraz Charhi is an acclaimed Israeli actress, singer, and dancer. Internationally, Liraz is best known for her role as an Israeli Mossad agent in the acclaimed Apple TV espionage series "Tehran." She gained significant attention for her role in the Israeli TV series "Ha-Masa'it" and her performance in the film "Turn Left at the End of the World." She has also released several successful singles and Persian albums, including "Naz" and "Zan," and served in the Israel Defense Forces' military band.

 

Ambassador Meryl Frank is an international champion of women’s leadership, human rights, and political participation, and a frequent speaker on gender, health, environment, and refugee issues worldwide. Frank was appointed as the United States Representative, and subsequently, as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) by President Barack Obama in February 2009.She is also the president of Makeda Global Network, a consulting firm focusing on women’s leadership and political participation.

 

Danielle Ofek is an Israeli activist and a pioneering figure in tech and social entrepreneurship, known for her dynamic approach to gender parity and women's rights. Recognizing a significant gap in the international community’s response to the sexual violence perpetrated against Israeli women and girls on October 7th, Danielle founded Angle, an initiative challenging the prevalent misinformation and biases in the reporting and responses to these incidents. The #MeToo_Unless_UR_A_Jew campaign is one of Angle's key projects.

 

Catherine Perez-Shakdam is a distinguished research fellow at the American Centre for Levant Studies and serves as the director of Forward Strategy Ltd., a specialized consultancy focusing on political and media strategies across the UK, Middle East, Eastern Europe, and the Indo-Pacific region. A respected media commentator, Catherine regularly contributes to major outlets like I24, the BBC, The Jerusalem Post, Politico, Daily Express, and the Daily Mail. She gained global recognition in 2021 for her decade-long undercover investigation within the Iranian regime, which led to ground-breaking insights into its inner workings.

 

Meredith Jacobs (moderator) is CEO of Jewish Women International, where she has shepherded the development of numerous JWI initiatives to address domestic and sexual violence, empower survivors, and promote women’s leadership throughout the Jewish community. Jacobs is an award-winning journalist and former editor-in-chief of Washington Jewish Week. Named one of the “50 Most Influential Jews of 2020” by The Jerusalem Post, Jacobs is a sought-after speaker, moderator and writer. Among other volunteer leadership positions, Jacobs serves on the expert panel on Improving Access to Services for Domestic Abuse Victims in the Military, sponsored by the Department of Defense.
