3-2-1: A bipartisan gun law to support

3 Finally, a bipartisan gun law to support!

After so many years we are getting closer to passing federal legislation that could strengthen our existing guys laws. Spurred to action by the mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, TX, a bipartisan group of Senators, Cornyn (R-TX), Murphy (D-CT), Scott (R-SC), Blumenthal (D-CT), Hatch (R-UT), Feinstein (D-CA), Heller (R-NV), and Shaheen (D-NH), have co-sponsored the “Fix NICS Act of 2017” to make sure no abuser has access to a gun. With fifty-four percent of mass shootings related to domestic and family violence it is imperative that domestic violence records are uploaded to the federal database. Countless lives will be saved if this bill passes, but we need your help. Call your Senators now and tell them to join their colleagues from both sides of the aisle in co-sponsoring the “Fix NICS Act”!

2 Press for the passage of IVAWA

Living free from violence is a human right, but around the world one in three women experience abuse during their lifetimes. The bi-partisan International Violence Against Women Act would codify into law strategies to prevent and respond to gender-based violence globally and make ending violence against women and girls a top diplomatic priority in the United States. For 16 days, beginning on November 25th, JWI and hundreds of other organizations working to end violence against women and girls will use #16days on social media to spread awareness and advocate for IVAWA’s passage. 1 Remember the DREAMers on Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving week, let's remember the story of Thanksgiving is also the story of refugees and freedom-seekers, risking their lives to travel to a new country. As we honor the harvest celebration between the Native Americans and the Pilgrims nearly 500 years ago, we must consider the 800,000 Dreamers who were brought to this country by their parents for the same reasons. If we salute the moral conviction of the pilgrims in their quest to a life free from persecution in an unknown land, we must also demand that these young people be allowed to stay in the country they call home. Call your Senators and Representative and demand they pass the DREAM Act.

And for you...

A last minute recipe for your Thanksgiving table. It's called "Zucchini Bread," but honestly, it tastes more like "Zucchini Cake." Enjoy this delicious family recipe from JWI's Meredith Jacobs.

And after you feed your family on Thanksgiving...feed your soul on #GivingTuesday and remember JWI.
