Washington, D.C. – Jewish Women International (JWI) is both alarmed and outraged by President Trump’s budget. Released today, this plan turns a blind eye to the needs of women, children, and the elderly. It removes access to healthcare, food, and shelter for the most vulnerable in our nation. Low-income women and families will be the hardest hit, facing losses of vital services and programs that millions of Americans rely on each day. Instead, funds are reallocated to bolster an already robust defense department, and to provide new tax breaks for the wealthy.

Low-income women and families will bear the burden of cuts to Medicaid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the Child Tax Credit (CTC), Legal Services Corporation (LSC), and housing programs. Survivors of domestic and sexual violence often rely on these programs to help get back on their feet.

“This budget is not only heartless, but thoughtless. When we pinch pennies at the expense of the vulnerable, women and families feel the sting,” JWI CEO Lori Weinstein says. “The cost of this shortsighted approach to deficit reduction would be devastating.”

JWI will fight to ensure this budget, as outlined, never sees the President’s pen. It sets the tone for a future that fails to help those in need, including survivors of sexual and domestic violence.

These unprecedented cuts would decimate essential programs that are disproportionately relied on by women. We call on Congress to prevent this administration’s discriminatory budget from wreaking havoc on the lives of women and families.
