Abuse in Later Life: What is it and how can my community respond?


Join us for a discussion on abuse in later life, led by Lisa Furr, M.A.  and Katie Block, M.S.W., M.P.H., of the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL). We’ll define the issue and explore the agencies needed to address it; resources and funding opportunities to support the work, and ways of collaborating to make a difference in our communities.

The discussion will include:

  • Who responds to it in your community and how do we work together?

  • What are the local and national resources available to those experiencing abuse in later life?

  • What are some funding opportunities that can address abuse in later life in your community?

Lisa Furr, M.A.  is the Program Manager for the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL), where she provides nationwide leadership, technical assistance, and training to professionals across the country on various topics related to abuse in later life, including creating and enhancing coordinated community response (CCR) and systems change. She also assists in the development of training materials and resources related to abuse in later life. Previously Furr worked as the Project Manager at the Virginia Office of Attorney General where she assisted with programming initiatives related to domestic violence and sexual assault specifically working on the sexual assault kit testing initiative and implementing the Lethality Assessment Program. Furr also collaborated with statewide partners in Virginia to coordinate and deliver training and technical assistance on working with victims from underserved populations, including African Americans, elderly victims, and victims with limited English proficiency. For ten years, she served on the board of Virginia Coalition for the Prevention of Elder abuse, as its chair and conference committee chair. Furr has over 30 years’ experience in group dynamics, training, and diversity. She holds a Master’s degree from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. Furr lives and works in Richmond, Virginia.

Katie Block, M.S.W., M.P.H. is a Project Coordinator for the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL), where she provides nationwide leadership, technical assistance, and training to victim services professionals across the country on topics related to abuse in later life, and elder justice. She coordinates NCALL’s work on the Office for Victims of Crime’s National Resource Center for Reaching Victims (NRC); a one-stop shop where professionals and policymakers may get information and expert guidance to enhance their capacity to identify, reach, and serve all victims. In her past work, Block supervised a victim services program designed for older adults in Philadelphia, PA. Her focus was on ensuring equitable access to justice for older victims and developing programming and collaborations to better reach victims. Prior to her work in victim services, Block worked as a social issues marketing and communications consultant, providing marketing strategy, material development, and strategic planning support for social service organizations. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Rhode Island and received a Master of Social Work and a Master of Public Health from Temple University. 


The National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL), a project of End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin: The Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence, since 1999, has been the only national organization that provides technical assistance, education and consultation on the intersection of domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse.  NCALL has been the sole comprehensive OVW TA provider for the purpose area Enhanced Training and Services to End Abuse in Later Life program and the only OVW TA resource center addressing abuse in later life.

The National Resource Center for Reaching Victims (NRC) is a collaborative project funded by the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) to serve as a one-stop shop where victim service providers, culturally specific organizations, criminal justice professionals, and policy makers can get information and expert guidance to increase their capacity to identify, reach, and serve all victims, especially victims in the margins.
