321ACTION: Urge the Senate to pass the historic bipartisan gun legislation package now!

Your civic action to-do list for June 13, 2022

Act on Gun Violence

There have been 20+ mass shootings in the 19 days since the Uvalde, Texas massacre. The Senate may have finally decided that enough is enough. Senators have come to an agreement on bipartisan gun safety legislation that will:

· Close the "boyfriend loophole" to prevent dating partners convicted of domestic violence from obtaining and owning firearms, so that no abuser can own a weapon.

· Create a grant program to assist states in enacting and implementing extreme risk protection orders to remove guns from individuals deemed to be a risk to themselves or others.

· Enhance background checks for gun buyers 18-21 and enact a short waiting period before purchase.

·  Provide billions of dollars in funding for mental health and school safety

·  Enact the first federal law against gun trafficking and straw purchasing (when someone purchases a gun for someone else who would not pass a background check).

The passage of this legislation is not guaranteed. We need your help to show the Senate that Americans want this life-saving legislation passed swiftly! Contact your senators now.

Take Action for Reproductive Choice

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade through the Mississippi v. Dobbs ruling is anticipated to take effect any day now. This decision will disproportionately impact the millions of Americans who are BIPOC, LGBTQ+, living in southern and rural states, and/or are low-income.

On June 15th at 12:30 PM ET, join JWI and Plan C for a training on the state of abortion in the U.S. and how to access medication abortion, a safe option that will still be available following the decision.

The weekend of Juneteenth (June 18th & 19th), attend “Black Bodies for Black Power” in D.C. to highlight the effects of this ruling on Black women.

Support LGBTQ+ Communities

Many states have launched attacks against LGBTQ+ communities, from Florida banning the discussion of gender and sexuality to Texas preventing gender-affirming care. It is crucial to the health and safety of LGBTQ+ youth and adults, that legislation is enacted to stem the tide of these discriminatory laws.

The Equality Act will prevent discrimination on the basis of sexuality and gender identity. Ask your senators to pass this bill now.
